As I punched in the numbers on the electronic key pad that actuates the lock on the meeting room next to my office, I looked down and saw an individually wrapped cookie sitting on the floor-level sill of the office window. The cookie was not for me, but the lesson of it is for everyone.

One of the clients where I work (New Danville, a rural nonprofit for adults with special needs) always brings a cookie to one of the direct support professionals. He usually gives it to her when she is behind that door as the team prepares for the day. If the door is opened, he goes in to give her a cookie and a hug. On days when he does not have the chance to go in, he leaves the cookie as described. Everyone knows who the cookie is for and who it is from.  Along with the treat, there was wisdom on the sill.

  • Kind reminders of affection or appreciation are good to give and to receive.
  • Respect the kindness of others and don’t try to take credit for their efforts.
  • You don’t always have to witness the effect of your kind gesture.
  • Simply be kind for kindness sake…not for credit or returned gestures.

For whom can you leave a “cookie” today?
