Lord, grant me patience. Give me understanding, humility and a heart that hears in others’ expressions their hopes, dreams, fears and concerns. I serve you, Lord, by working to understand by listening for what others are trying to communicate and not just to what they say and how they say it. Holy Spirit, give me the wisdom to realize positive opportunities in all things for therein are the things worthy of praise.

Years later, after I had left the university, I paid her a visit. On the wall was the painting. She asked my permission to move the painting to the house at the university ranch after she died. I told her that I was sure the university would respect her request, but I was no longer there and had no influence. She said, “I know I would not have received the beautiful painting if it weren’t for you. I would like your permission.” Of course, I agreed with her desire. I was pleased that she knew that we understood who she was, what her life was about and what she had truly given us.
A few months later, I sent her a note. It was returned to me with “Deceased” marked on the envelope. Honor others while you can.
