A few weeks ago, I watched a bunch of youngsters playing in puddles in a field. They splashed through, hopped in and sloshed out of them. The field is next to church and they were in their church clothes, having completed their Sunday obligations. These kids, ranging from about 3 to 12, could not resist the call of the puddle. I get that. I played in puddles as a kid, then played in them with my kids, and then there have been times when I still can’t resist walking through a puddle barefoot. Some things just can’t be resisted. There are some siren calls we shouldn’t ignore.
Over the years, a variety of forces (and voices) tell us to resist the irresistible. Sure, there are some things we should avoid for a lot of reasons, but there are others we should respond to. Dip your finger into the mixer bowl as the cake better is being blended and then lick your finger clean. Make your moves on the hopscotch pattern you find on your walk around the neighborhood. If you find a nice rock while walking near a pond or lake, you absolutely must try skipping the stone. There are some songs that you must sing to for personal reasons. Maybe puddles are a lure for you, too.
I’m sure that you can think of many more if you give it a few minutes of thought. That said, don’t think too much. Your heart will tell you when you see something you can’t resist, and it will be happy that you responded.
