I wonder if I am taking the right job offer.
I wonder if this is the right thing to wear tonight.
I wonder if the boss is going to like my idea.
I wonder if this is the right person for me to be around.
I wonder if I’ll get a raise this year.
I wonder if my car can hold on a bit longer until I can afford a repair.
I wonder if my friend quit caring about me.
I wonder what is on television tonight.
I wonder how many hits my social media post has received.
I wonder…
Wonder less. Explore in wonder more.
There is plenty to wonder about in our daily lives. Decisions, challenges, curiosities. We wonder a lot. I know I do. Too much so. We owe it to ourselves to spend less time wondering about ourselves and spend more time in wonder of all that is around us (and beyond).
Exploring in wonder, living in wonder and sensing in wonder give us new perspectives. We learn humility. We gain appreciation, thankfulness and gratitude. We are minuscule parts of Creation, which is grand, magnificent, awe-inspiring and mind-boggling. There will never be an end to what we can learn, see and appreciate. The intricate and the grand, the infinitesimal and the expansive demonstrate and reveal God’s power. He is indeed a God of Wonders.
Look at what an electron microscope sees. Explore to your heart’s content and your mind’s curiosity the world we cannot see and how magnificent every detail, even to sub-atomic levels, is. This creation is no accident, no happenstance of an explosion. Microscopes make the unseen visible and telescopes and space exploration reveal images of a cosmos that defies accurate description or true understanding. Every generation has had the arrogance to proclaim understanding of the universe and how it works. Every generation has been wrong; every generation will be wrong. Pride prevents us from wonder.
I’m no astronaut, scientist, adventurer or discoverer, but I try to explore beauty every day with a sense of wonder at the beauty of simplicity and the simplicity of beauty. I look with wonder at things around me and celebrate them in a project titled “A Beauty-Full Life 2019.” My wonder examines natural beauty and that which comes from the handiwork of others. I am in awe of carpenters and dancers, engineers and artists, parents and hermits, ditch diggers and architects.
Slow down. Pause. Appreciate. Wonder less and explore in wonder more.
